A Comment on a Comment

I am fairly new to blogging but tonight I am going to run right up to the edge of that Blogger Bear Pit and I may just find myself pushed over the edge by the time this blog is finished.  However, as many pointed out to Al (The Bayfield Bunch) on his post last night, the blog belongs to the writer and the writer gets to decide what to say.  Now, one thing I don’t know is the etiquette of quoting comments from other blogs so if I have offended here let me apologize in advance.  If there is some unwritten rule about this, let me know and I won’t do it again.  But I am going to do it this time.

I didn’t leave a comment on Al’s blog as I thought he had plenty of food for thought.  I did however read all of the comments which were left and I just have to comment on one of the comments…if that makes any sense.  What I have to say was too long and perhaps a bit too opinionated to leave on someone else’s blog so I decided to use it as my topic for tonight.

First of all, I applaud Al’s decision to leave the anonymous comments in.  Like someone said, everyone has an opinion.  I appreciate the technical aspects of Al’s photography and I happen to like his flower pictures, his bird pictures, his ongoing war with the black squirrel, and I love that he still posts photos of Max and Checkers from time to time.  Just because a pet is gone is no reason to not remember them.  It’s not like you just throw them away like yesterday’s garbage.

I think there were some good comments and I hope Al finds the courage to move in the direction that is right for him and not for anyone else.  We write what we write because that is what is in our hearts.  And if we try to be someone who we are not, then our writing will also suffer.  I believe that is true for every blogger out there.  “To thine own self, be true.”

It was one of the anonymous comments that got me thinking and wanting to address what was said.  Part of what was said by Anonymous is quoted below….understand this is not the entire quote, it is just what I wish to direct my thoughts towards.

“I am about to go on the road and one of my concerns is finding like minded people to meet in my travels. So far, I have subscribed to 50 RSS feeds, and to be honest, I am pretty tired of looking at pictures of flowers all the time. There is a pretty heavy slant on those who are overly religious, overly republican, and in general, not much like me.”

And further the same commenter states,

“If I agree with your writing, more than likely, I will also agree with who your friends are, and find your blogroll links to friends, who I would also agree with.”

I have no argument with this writer’s “right” to say whatever he wants to.  I just happen to have a different slant on the matter.  Some of what he said, which I did not quote here,  was good advice.  However, maybe I am missing something.  If we all are only reading the blogs we always agree with and are seeking out only like minded souls to befriend then where is the opportunity for growth?

Anonymous states that those who are overly religious, or overly republican are not like him and infers that those are people he would like to avoid.  Well, I am a Christian – although I would not call myself religious by any means.  I was a republican for many years but am not sure I still wish to be labeled as such.  I will stand up and say I am a conservative though (whatever that means nowadays!!).

But I do not wish to cloister myself with only Christians or only be friends with conservatives.  Where is the challenge in that?  How do you open your mind to new ideas and learn new things if you only surround yourself with clones of yourself?  How do you pass on your own ideas if everyone you meet already agrees with you?

I welcome a respectful discussion of differing ideas.  I am not a lesbian but I have lesbian friends.  I am not a democrat but I have friends who are.  I am not a liberal but I won’t hate you if that is how you think.  I do not automatically cut people from my life because they are atheists, or Buddhists, or any other “ist” that is out there.  I am glad life does not have a “delete” key with which to exclude people from my life.

The common ground that I hope to find on these blog networks are those who love to travel, love life, and are not afraid of being challenged.  If you are courageous enough to get out there and go places that others may not wish to go, if you are willing to live a lifestyle that some may find strange  (or worse!), then why would you want to limit your acquaintances to only those who think like you do?  It is not the disagreements that cause problems, it is the INTOLERANCE for those differences of opinions that creates friction.

So bring it on.  We all probably have a circle of friends we feel closer to due to our shared beliefs and value systems, but I want to meet and talk with whoever happens to cross my pathway.  I won’t judge you for your lifestyle and I hope that courtesy is reciprocated.  I won’t judge you for what you write or don’t write in your blog and I hope you will do likewise.

So did I fall into the bear pit with this one?  Will anyone throw me the rope?

  1. You go Girl! I sometimes want to post opinions but hold back most of the time. I write the blog but share the travels with Mo, so it's her blog too, and her opinions aren't necessarily the same as mine, so I save that part for other venues. Just for funnies...Mo is conservative Christian, I am progressive lover of many of the world's religions. We travel safely in life and the MoHo with great tolerance and respect for each other. It's a good way to travel through life in general, although that is just my opinion. LOL

  3. Donna..good for you for voicing your opinion..I, too read Al's post and I am one who believes that everyone is an individual and we all have our opinions, lifestyles and beliefs..that is what makes this blogging world so diversified!..we are all different but able to come together for the common love of blogging..if we all wrote the same just imagine how boring reading all the blogs would be..!

so my friend.. I am extending the 'rope' in the hopes that you won't need it..you are entitled to your beliefs and opinions!!..and good for you for writing about them!

  4. Hear, hear!!! It would be a very boring world if we all felt exactly the same...a world full of Stepford RVers.

I follow a LOT of blogs on a LOT of topics. Some I read for a while and then delete from my reader. Some bring me new ideas and stimulate me. Some frustrate me. Some amuse me. Some make me smile and even laugh. Some teach me things. Some make me think about myself. Some make me think about others.

What a wonderful world we live in that we have such a great choice of blogs to follow...or not.

  5. To blog or not to blog. I am so hoping that everybody blogs and that eventually I can find time to read them. I love following along with people where ever they are going, reliving memories if I happen to have traveled their way. I learn so much from those who are willing to express their thoughts and opinions. Do I always agree? Absolutely not. Thank goodness. I sure wouldn't want everybody to agree with me because there are times when I don't agree with me. How can we learn and grow and expand our world if we don't have new experiences and people to get to know. So we have a great tow rope. It's yours to use whenever or if you need it.

  6. As to your first question about quoting ‘comments’ from other blogs it’s perfectly fine as far as I’m concerned. I’ve done it and I’ve also quoted statements directly from other blogger’s posts. I don’t know of any etiquette rule against it at all but I’m not the ‘blogging judge’ either. I just do what I think is o.k. because I don’t think there is any ‘King of the Bloggers’ to tell me anything different.

As for the Bear Pit – not necessary! Your opinions were respectful, honest and not offensive.

As to Mr. Anonymous – so what? He has his/her opinions just like the rest of us except he lacks the courage or conviction to attach a name. I read his sermon last night but I certainly didn’t think about it much. This person just said what he honestly thinks and that’s o.k. with me. I don’t take anonymous comments all that seriously to tell you the truth and I never ever worry about them.

  7. Well said, Donna. I would like to see people put more of their views in their blogs, and if the readers decide they don't want to read that blog, so be it. I can identify with certain blogs more than others, but that doesn't mean that I don't ever want to read about differing experiences and opinions.

  8. I agree with what everyone else has said! You certainly have the right to put whatever your little heart desires on your blog, as we all do, and everyone else has the right to take it or leave it. Leaving it though, totally my feelings here, don't necessarily give people the right to be mean. Not that I like her, but Taylor Swift has some inner depth in her song by that name M.E.A.N. We all have a responsibility to be civil to each other!

It's that word "intolerance" that's got us all so screwed up. And coming along with it, the feeling that it's okay to blurt out intolerant feelings about everything under the sun nowadays... It's those individual rights everyone wants to claim and abuse. I think we've learned it from the media... but that's a topic for another blog, and not mine! I'm a happy funny person and I'm not going there!!!

  9. Great post, Donna. I agree with what you say. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should not be criticized for expressing it. I read other blogs to learn, whether they are similar to my style of travel or not!

  11. My mother always told me "If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all."

If I came across a blog that I really was outraged about, I probably would try real hard to not leave a comment about it.

I have stopped following several blogs because they were not what I was looking for.

That is my way of disagreeing with someone.

But I do like to read others honest thoughts and feelings in their posts.

  12. Sounds like that fella wants a "yes" person to talk with...someone who won't disagree with him??? I find everyone interesting and as Donna said earlier...do we really want Stepford Rv'ers? Not me. If u like what ur reading, follow it, if not, don't. Not a problem to me, there are sooooo many other things to worry about. Take care and thanks for ur comments!

  14. LOVE your post!!! :) I think when somebody knows what they think and believe and feels comfortable with themselves, then they don't feel threatened by people who think differently. I am glad that there are all kinds of people in this world - life would sure be boring if we were all the same.

  15. no need for a rope, say what you want... say what you mean... it is after all your blog!

  16. Good post Donna. Part of the RVing lifestyle is about meeting new people - some similar to us, others not. We can learn so much from each other - we may not become best friends, but it sure seems to make life more interesting. I don't think you stepped on anyone's toes with your post - just expressing your view and that's OK. And what's so wrong with flower photos anyway? I love beautiful photos...just wish mine looked as good as Al's.

  17. Well written & well said Donna. Always great to read people's thoughts, feelings & ideas. I especially like reading posts by folks like yourself, Russ & others who have the honesty to express & be themselves. For the most part I find the majority of fellow Bloggers to be a very understanding, patient & caring bunch of folks. Good for you in writing what you think:))

  18. Well it appears that everyone has already said what I was going to say so no need to repeat. As a new blogger myself I find your opionion refreshing and bravo for you for speaking your mind - like people before me have said that's what a blog is for.

    Keep blogging.

  19. GREAT post Donna! We post lots of pics of various things but lots of birds and flowers. We LOVE photography and most folks photograph things they love...some nature, some still, some human. To each his own. We are also Christian and I don't apologize for that either. If someone doesn't like my writing or style they should NOT read my blog.
This lifestyle is full of different folks and that is what we like about it. If everyone were like Mike and I it sure would be boring.

  20. I really have nothing to add to what has already been said. Isn't it amazing how anonymous commentors can stir things up in this world? Maybe that's what they're after.

  21. I agree with you 100%. My thots are -- if you don't like what I write in my blog, don't read it -- I write mainly for friends & family who want to see & hear about what we are doing as we travel the road as a fulltimer. I think Al's pics are INCREDIBLE --if someone doesn't, they don't have to look at them or leave a comment. Why do people have to be mean or ugly -- can't we all just get along and respect each other's individuality??

  22. Let's make it unanimous! No need to get out a rope, no need for a bear pit. I write my blog the way I want, seldom expressing opinions or feelings, but that's my style. Al writes a lot of feelings and opinions, and that's his style. We all write about what we're are doing, seeing, even eating, and that's OK. Just do it!

    ReplyDelete
  23. After all the above, all I can say is good post.

Maybe it would have been a bit more fun and exciting if someone would have at least nudged you towards the pit :)

  24. Thanks for writing what you think, Donna. I don't have an RV blog, but follow many of them, yours and Al's included. I do, however, RV with my partner and have traveled for years and years.
I am a lesbian, but do have straight, but not narrow, friends. I also wish that the distinction never had to be discussed. It's pretty boring, you gotta admit.
I am also a liberal and fighter for civil rights, but you don't have to be.
I would most likely be called a democrat, but those folks are doing a lousy job these days, as are all politicians.
Christian? No, but you can be if you wish. Just don't try to push your opinions in my face, thank you.

Seems like our commonalities far outweigh our differences. And that's fine with me.
Was it fun in the bear pit? I think you did a marvelous job.

  25. I didn't read the comments on Al's blog, but I like your statement - "How do you pass on your own ideas, if everyone you meet already agrees with you?"

  26. Well said...all of you! The hair went up on the back of my neck when I was reading "Anonymous" comments! The response comments from Al and all of you are just how I feel and probably wouldn't have been able to say so well. Thanks! Tricia/aka nwlambear

  27. Wow. You have written so eloquently and have no need to fear the bear pit. What I don't understand is why anyone feels the need to criticize another's blog. If you don't like the way it is written, don't read it. If you do feel the need to comment, then take ownership of it and put your name to it; otherwise, it just feels like bullying.

  28. Just found your blog via The Bayfield Bunch. I'm going to have to look in on it. I like your writing style, your honesty, and your respect and tolerance for ideas outside your own. You sound like a very interesting person.
