The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly!

Russ and I went to Portland over the weekend to See Bekah perform with the Portland Girl’s Rock N Roll Camp.  Didn’t take the motorhome as it seemed easier to stay at the Marriott for just one night.

The Good:  Poppy went with us and was just as good as gold.  We left her at our son’s house while we went to the performance.  John has two cats and they were both still alive and kicking when we got back two hours later.   I thought maybe the animals had all had a fight in Bekah’s room but her parents assured me the room always looks like that – I think she gets it from me.  Hate housework!!

More good -  Bekah did excellent on the drums.  She gained some confidence and learned a few fills and wrote the drum part for her band’s performance.

The Bad:  The venue for this performance was McMenemin’s historic Bagdad Theater in Downtown Portland. UGH!!  A huge facility and NO PARKING.  We were lucky enough to get a spot on the street only about half block away so it was okay.  Then we stood in a long line in direct sunshine and it was hotter than – well, use your imagination.

The theater was dark and crowded and the noise level was about to drive me to distraction.  Trying to find a place to sit and trying to find Russ, who had stayed behind in the restaurant to finish his meal.  Mass confusion, hoards of closely packed strangers, some of them TOUCHING me(!) – not my cup of tea.

Then the performances started.  This Rock N Roll camp is for girls only and it takes all comers.  No musical experience required!  On the first day they turn the girls loose to make their own groups and no one knows anyone else or what they can do.  Bekah was lucky in that she got a girl who played some on the keyboard and one who could carry a tune.  I give these girls a lot of credit.  From complete strangers of all skill levels, they had one week to WRITE THEIR OWN SONG and learn it well enough to perform in front of about 500 people on a live stage.  They all had fun and they all did their best.

I have to admit some(most) of it was pretty painful but like I said, ya gotta give 'em credit for trying.  I have to show off Bekah laying down some pretty good licks on the drums.  I edited most of the singing out so there are some skips.  Bekah only had about 6 months of drum lessons about two years ago so I thought she did great,  Here’s a short clip.  Her drum “solo” is a little more than halfway (52 seconds) through.  Bekah wrote the drum part and taught herself the beats.

Now, THE UGLY:  I think that would be me.  I had a really bad weekend.  Besides sitting through two hours of “music” that only a parent (or grandparent!) could love, I spent the weekend on an emotional roller –coaster.  Maybe it was just the stress of the weekend but I just could not control my emotions.  It seems like I have been getting better and then this weekend I just crashed.  Don’t know why.  I haven’t been able to read blogs or comment or write for several days.  Have no interest in much of anything.  Maybe it’s normal, I don’t know.  I’ve never lived through anything quite like this double whammy before.

I felt physically ill all weekend, and got so dizzy in the theater I thought I was going to black out.  This is NOT normal for me.  The hotel bed was like sleeping on a sheet of plywood and then I fell and bruised my hand coming out the hotel door.  Luckily Russ was there to keep me from going all the way down or it could have been much worse.  I really hate staying in hotels!!!

Tomorrow, we are going with Laila and Brian over to the coast.  They want to buy us an early anniversary dinner.  The real date is the 21st but they want to celebrate with us before they leave on a little trip.  Perhaps the beauty of the coast will somehow temper the “ugly” that I am feeling inside right now.  I certainly hope so.

  1. awww, Donna, take care of yourself. Of COURSE you are going to crash a bit, and usually it happens later on in these kinds of situations. After all the letters and flowers and condolences, comes the emptiness. Give yourself time.

  2. We have sat through many a school program that only a parent or grandparent could love. The Camp sounds like a great one though. If it gave Bekah more confidence then it was well worth it. I couldn't hear the singer too good but I am sure she did a great job.

IMHO Donna...you have been under a ton of emotional stress the last two months. You are dealing with your lovely sister's death and then the death of Rusty. That is a lot to handle in such a short period of time. I am so sorry that you are going through this right now. You may just be emotionally drained. You also had the girls with you for a few weeks which doesn't allow for much quiet time to reflect on what has been going on in your life. I will keep you in my prayers for comfort and understanding. I pray you will be feeling much better very soon!

  3. As the other two commenters said, you've suffered two great losses in a short amount of time. I probably could have predicted your crash. I hope it's the only one, but don't count on it. You're human and you lost a big part of your life. Be kind to yourself and allow yourself to grieve. I'm glad you have Russ to lean on.

  4. I think we all understand. Losing loved ones is hard. It'll take a while to bounce back. You've been through a lot.

Happy anniversary and enjoy your special dinner.

  5. Just take your time and chill out a bit. No one can be 100% normal (?) after what you've gone through recently. Slow but sure...and take time to relax and smell those roses.

  6. Donna, from what I know of you from following your blog this down mood won't last long. You will deal with it by evoking your positive personality and your sense of humor. You have a vision of life that will pull you through, probably sooner than later.

  7. It's okay to crash once in awhile. You wouldn't be normal if you didn't. You need time to grieve, to remember and to recover. Sending lots of hugs your way.

  8. Rollercoasters of emotions are common, unfortunately. As long as you eventually have more ups than downs, you will be fine. You've been through a lot--go easy on yourself! You also may be physically tired as well as emotionally stressed. Try to get as much rest as you can.

  9. You will work your way thru this. Remember why you named your RV Therapy. Hope you find some time for just you and Russ and get some sunny days.

I found a lot of peace and happiness in our trip to Oregon. I wish we could have gotten up there, but it just didn't feel right. Maybe next time.

maybe some time on the coast will brighten things up for you..
just know you are surrounded with your family and friends..and they will take the good with the bad just as those of us in blogville will.

  13. I know all the above comments say it all... but I just want to add that you have a lot of love and support and good thoughts coming from your blog friends.

  14. I had a year like that after my dad died. I would go back and forth from feeling normal some days to just melancholy and down on others. Like everyone else has said, hang in there...sending you lots of positive thoughts...:)

  15. As everyone else has said, take it easy on yourself. They say time heals all wounds.

  16. You have been through a lot in the past couple of months and the ups and downs will come, but the downs will disappear. Enjoy the coast and being together. Take care!

  17. Some time on the beautiful Oregon Coast away from everything just may be what you need, Donna, to overcome the emotional stress you've been experiencing.

I know I've read about the different 'stages of grief' that we all go through with the loss of a loved one and I'm sure you are in the middle of this.

    All the best.

  18. Sorry you're going through a difficult time, but if it helps any it is completely normal. Grieving is a tough process and hits you in unexpected ways. There are going to be these kinds of days and these kinds of breakdowns. As much as you can talk to people about it, it helps to go through that process. Know that we're thinking of you out here!

  19. This "meltdown" weekend seems utterly normal (sorry, Donna. Now, if we were talking about RUSS being "normal," well...). There is no way you're already doing "well," whatever that is. You've suffered big, BIG losses, and your body is saying hey, I am NOT OKAY.

  20. Donna, this is sooo normal, u have been thru 2 terrible losses and still had to go thru ur daily duties to keep things going. I'm sure u will have period of depression, which is perfectly "normal" if there is such a thing. Remember, "normal" is whatever is usual for us, don't try to make urself live by anyone else's standards...do what is comfortable and necessary for u. Ur body and emotions will tell u what u need to do if u just sit quietly and listen to them. If u feel like u need to cry, cry,....if u want to work in the yard, do it. It will be ur body's way of telling u what u need to do to recover. And don't set any time limits, it takes what it takes. Just try to find some joy in each day and pretty soon u will notice that ur having more good than sad days. U r going thru a very difficult time my friend...my prayers will be continually with u. Heavenly Father loves u and is there when we feel like no one else is. Do something good for urself each day, even if it's just one thing and do it without guilt because u dear friend deserve it.

  21. No words of advice Donna, just know that I understand how you are feeling. And, I also know, 'this too shall pass'.

  22. I will just echo the rest of the folks here who are encouraging you to allow yourself your emotions. While they are rough to ride, they are so important to your healing. Losing loved ones (both human and furry) is tough and you've lost two in a very short span of time.

Cry out to God, He knows your pain and wants to hold you in His arms while you let it all go.

  23. Gotta love grandkids' performances though not that awful emotional distress. I think I'm having sympathy pains; not a good week. Better times ahead!

  24. Hey Donna

I haven't been back in awhile and wasn't aware of your loss. No great words of wisdom (having little experience at this sort of thing) except to wish you the best.
