Just wanted to say a big, heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you who took the time to send your condolences and make a comment on our loss of Poppy. I tried to respond personally to those I have an email for. For those who have a “do not reply” on their comment profile, I wanted to be sure you know how much your comments have meant to Russ and me. Susan, thank you for the sweet poem.
Poppy, August 2007, Harbor Vista Park on the Oregon coast
We are doing okay but never far from tears. We know we will be okay, it just takes time. Poppy was very much our little girl and we miss her terribly. It’s doubly sad because we have made the decision that Poppy was our last. We don’t have the energy to keep up with another one and it wouldn’t be fair to the dog. But we will always treasure every moment we had with Poppy and with Rusty too.
We have a houseful of grandkids here this week so are staying busy with that. I guess that’s a good thing but it’s kinda hard too.
Again, thank you all. It really does help to know others care and are sharing in our sorrow.
We have also said that when these two girls are gone, they are also our last. I definitely do not want to ever outlive my dog. But I also said my Ginger was our last one and then we got two. If the emptiness gets too bad maybe I'll rescue a senior for a couple of years of love. I think about you and send my love every day.
ReplyDeleteThinking about you two and sending hugs and our love! Time will make the pain ease and the memories will make you smile and not cry!
ReplyDeleteAww, you're welcome.
ReplyDeleteI think the kids onthe house will be a wonderful happy way to spend this week. The house may seem empty without Poppy but the kids will fill the void.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to get past the 'last outs' routine. :(
ReplyDeleteI too suffered a loss. We had to put our beloved Arthur the cat down today. He got sick very suddenly and was diagnosed with kidney cancer. My heart aches for him.
ReplyDeleteI feel neglectful that I haven't been around lately, so I hadn't read this sad news.
ReplyDeleteI'm saddened to read this.
She had a good life. You can take comfort in that.
This is one of the challenges of having a pet. After putting down our fair share of cats and dogs over the years, we've decided we'd go it alone from now on.
It is hard to make a final decision when you are grieving. It is so hard to go through the pain over and over I know but they had so much to our lives I cannot ever imagine not having one. You guys seem to young to go it alone. But everyone has to make that decision for themselves I realize that. When we lost our little wire haired dachshund on 9/11/01 I thought I would die. It took me months and months and I can still cry when I think of him.
ReplyDeleteI will sure miss seeing your little girl on your post she was a doll baby. Hugs to you both.
We have also said no to any more pets, but the temptation is always there. Enjoy other peoples dogs, and constantly remind yourself why you made this choice to be pet free.
ReplyDeleteStill wiping tears away. My poor daughter thought something was wrong when she walked in, yesterday. It's almost impossible to explain to someone who doesn't blog just how attached you get to the people (friends, in your case) and their pups. It's something so many RVrs have in common--our love of our fur kids.
ReplyDeleteI'm not far from facing the same thing with Jack, Donna, unless I go before him--it's kind of a race to the end for the two of us. It would be so much less worry if Rich were here, but then he would have had to face the same worry. If I have to send him off I'll do it knowing that I gave him the best life I could. I'd worry about leaving him - he's so used to our ways. My daughter would be very very good to him, but she has work and other interests so things wouldn't be the same for him. No more for me, either. It's just too sad to lose them and a worry that they will out last me.
Your grand kids will put some motion and noise back in the house. That's a good thing. Time will soften your loss, but Poppy and Rusty will always be in your heart. What amazes me when I've seen pictures of Poppy is how young she looked--she didn't show a bit of old age. I think that was because she had such a happy life with you and Russ.
We've known several seniors who have gone to Doggie Heaven recently. We know Duchess isn't too far behind as she is way past her prime. Our hearts go out to you.
ReplyDeleteWe are so sorry for your loss of Poppy, it is so sad to lose a pet, they really are a part of the family. We certainly know how you feel, it's been almost two years now that we lost Whiskey and she is always close to our heart and we think of her often. Like you we made the decission not to get another one, instead we make a fuss of every dog that we see, sometimes it is hard to not want to take one home with you. It will take time to get over the lose but always remember the wonderful memories that she has given you.

I had the weirdest experience. Last evening on our walk, a sweet dog ran up to us to day hello. I said to Ron, "She looks just like Poppy!" Of course he asked, "Who's Poppy?", but that's beside the point. Once again, I'm so sorry for your loss.
ReplyDeleteAww, how sweet. Wish you had a picture!!
Deleteone day at a time and one post at a time..take care of each and enjoy the grandkids..it will fill the void at least partially.
ReplyDeleteI said the same thing when we lost our last Lab Duke,.Like President Bush on taxes,"No More Puppies.:two weeks later my son is laying this little black furball on my chest while I am sleeping and saying "His name is Rigg's and yur the Father".Never to old to raise a dog. If it's meant to be it will happen believe me. Am I ever glad it did. your friend Sam...
ReplyDeleteI'm sure these are such sad days. Definitely the hardest part of having a pet. They bring such joy to our lives, and it's so hard to say goodbye. :(
ReplyDeleteI know you've decided not to have another furry family member, but if you ever changed your mind, do you like cats at all? I think they fit into a traveling lifestyle a little easier, since they happily hang out at home when you are out sightseeing etc. And they sure bring joy to our lives. :)
This made me cry. I send love and condolences. You guys know how I love the doggies!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you'll have a houseful of Grandkids for the weekend. Family time is certainly a help we've found at times like this. Take care.
ReplyDeleteI read your blog regularly; have yet to make a comment. However, as a dog owner myself & one who has had to make "that decision" 5 times myself -- reading about Poppy brought tears to my eyes. I'm so sorry, and just wanted to pass along my sincerest condolences.

So sorry for your loss. Poppy was fortunate to have you as parents and she will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear about the loss of Poppy. I know how difficult it can be to lose a pet. It will get better.
ReplyDeleteit helps a little bit to know that you are not alone in this sadness...that has helped me in the past.....
ReplyDeleteHey Donna...sorry for your loss. I know as hard as I've tried to adopt out Jeepers, sure don't know what I'd do without him sometimes.
ReplyDeleteWhen our cat Quincy died last November we said no more. Three weeks later we had two kittens. We love them but wish we had said no.
