The Long, Long Trailer

Just as a follow up to yesterday’s post, I wanted to post this You Tube promo clip from The Long, Long Trailer.  Many of you are familiar with this 1953 movie, but I was surprised that some were not.  This is a must see for every RVer.  Some of it was filmed in Yosemite so you might recognize parts of the scenery.  If you can watch this movie without at least one big old out-loud guffaw, you have more control than I do.  So, check this out…the movie is available on Amazon for $4.99 on DVD.  Would be cheap at twice the price.  (nobody paid me to say this lol!!)

Yesterday we drove to Salem for lunch with Russ’s sister and brother and their spouses.  We don’t see them nearly as much as we’d like to as none of them live very close.  Seated at the table, clockwise, Russ’s sister. Alice, Russ, SIL Bonnie, Brother Fred, their granddaughter Meredith, yours truly and BIL Elmer.  Great folks.  Elmer is a real card – always a lot of fun. Alice is as dear as my own sister.   Fred and Bonnie spend winters in Palm Springs where they have a condo, and Fred makes hand crafted golf clubs in his spare time.  We had a great lunch at Red Lobster and had fun catching up.

That’s all for now – carpet cleaners are here so maybe I’ll have a clean carpet for the first time in a couple of years!!  Poppy had developed the habit of bringing bits of food into the living/dining room and eating them on the carpet.  Of course Russ didn’t help matters by feeding her from the table constantly.  I finally gave up and put a place mat on the floor by our chairs so she could eat with us.  It was a case of too little, too late I’m afraid.  But I really don’t care…it made Poppy happy to eat with us and it made Russ happy to “sneak” food to her from  his plate.  So it’s all good – and I'm glad we did everything we did to make our old gal happy.  But it will sure be nice to have clean carpets again!

  1. that movie is a classic!
nice to have clean carpets again but I am sure you would give anything to re-live those little-bits of food on the floor. :)

  3. Hi, My sister and I watched the Long, Long Trailer when she visited me from Florida over Christmas - I had told her of my plans and she brought polka-dot sweaters and poodle skirts for us to wear while watching it ! - I just bought the DVD on BestBuy.com for $4.99 and they have Free shipping on everything - so I had it sent directly to her in Florida - What a surprise when she opened her mailbox - and lots of good memories - Happy Trails - Cindy in Dayton, OH

    1. Hi Cindy - what a great idea of dressing for the era of the movie. I had to laugh at the travel clothes in some of the scenes; a suit for him and a dressy dress with white gloves and a hat for her. Too funny.

  4. I remember that movie... mostly I remember Lucy trying to cook while Ricky was driving.... now that we've been on the road for so many years, I realize that wasn't very realistic... however, what did Lucy do that was EVER realistic?

  5. I remember watching the Long, Long Trailer just before we headed off to Oregon to pick up our motorhome in Portland and drive it to Virginia. Thanks to lessons learned from that movie, I didn't attempt to make dinner while Mui was driving ;-)))

    1. That's a good thing, Erin! It sure was a funny scene though. Makes me wonder how many inexperienced RVers might have actually attempted that.

  7. Such a fun movie. Always enjoy it and definitely some good ole laughing going on. That group at the table looks like a whole lot of trouble getting ready to happen. I know what you mean about food on the carpet - I gave up and put their bowls on the rug and that seems to help. Anything for the princesses.

  8. I don't remember the movie. It's always fun to catch up. Wonder why we always do it over food?

  9. Good grief! That trailer is almost as big as the house trailer we lived in when I was first married in the late 70s. I can't imagine being able to pull it down the road with a car!

  10. Thanks for sharing a clip of the movie...it truly is a classic movie. It doesn't get much better than Lucille Ball. Glad you have clean carpets, but I bet you miss the reason for the soiled carpets.

  11. We have that movie and watch it every once in a while, to remind us of what not to do when we travel! :c)

  12. Never heard of that movie but, then again, I was never a Lucille Ball fan.

Clean carpets will be nice - just don't let Russ start eating his dinner off the floor!!

  13. I watched this classic not too long ago, but I never realized it was based on a book. I'm going to have to look for that in the library.

  14. Hi, Donna. I saw that movie when it came out. I remember that it was very funny, but I suspect I'll find it even funnier now that we actually owned an RV. I'll have to get it. Thanks for the reminder.

That's one good thing about my little trailer--no carpet to deal with, and I have only one rug in the house. I've been away from the computer for so long that it's futile to try to catch up on all reading, but I have read some. I'm looking forward to your tirp to Astoria! Hi to Russ.

  15. When we were traveling 395 we went to the pass near Bridgeport, I think, or somewhere there anyway, where that old film was made. Love watching it every time. Thanks for the reminder.
