This tree seems to be extremely brittle and we get small twigs down all the time. Last night ‘twas more than a twig that let loose.
One branch about 20’ long or more came down and took a bunch of little branches with it. Looking at the end of the big branch that went down tells us that this is NOT good!
We were lucky the electrical wire to the garage somehow escaped injury. Not so much my trellis and star jasmine. You can see the trellis buried there in the middle of the picture.
But when Russ and son-in-law Bob moved the limb, they found the jasmine was fine, the only casualty was the trellis.
We blame Bekah!! I have little fairies and angel statues in that garden. In a nod to Dr. Who (BBC Program) Bekah
Anyhow, we count ourselves lucky to have sustained no more damage than we did and three tree guys have been called to give us a bid. The tree is history!!
I don't think Dave and Carol's Parking Angel had anything to do with this, so I won't even entertain that thought. We did receive his help in parking on more than one occasion, however, so we are ever so grateful for you allowing him to come to our aid, Dave.
ReplyDeleteI had a similar event happen back in Missouri, on a clear day a limb gave way fell across the electrical service line in to the house and pulled the pole clear off the house. Of course, this happened on a Sunday.
ReplyDeleteWhen a thousand angels can fit on the head of a pin I doubt that there would be enough weight to bring down the limb. Your story is best and it's about time they started listening to you. LOL
Don't encourage her, John, I may never hear the end of it as it is now. ;)
DeleteRest assured, Dave's parking angel would never interfere with the work of other "angels". Maybe Donna's wish to have the tree removed was at work here? ;)
ReplyDeleteYou're probably right, Carol, but don't let Donna know, o.k.? :))
DeleteWow, so glad that it didn't land on the house or the garage. Maybe the tree was telling you that it was time for it to come down before it did any real damage.

It is coming down ASAP. No more taking chances with it.
DeleteWe had the same problem...but with old pine trees! Had about a dozen taken out of the yard at the land house.
ReplyDeleteJust think Donna...now you will be able to pick out a pretty tree that you like to replace that one!
New maple - yup!!
DeleteWhat does Bekah say about this? How could grandpa blame a poor innocent sweet girl? He is a monster!...hehe
ReplyDeleteOn a serious note...so glad no one was hurt.
Bekah is cracking up!!
DeleteGlad that is all the damage you received. Looks like it could have been much worse.
ReplyDeleteWe lost a big limb several years back and it damaged the patio cover. Don't want that to happen again...or worse.
DeleteGlad there wasn't worse damage, Donna and Russ. It looks so close to your house! I'm not quite sure whose story to believe. Just glad no one was hurt.
ReplyDeleteIt is very close to the house. That is why it's coming out ASAP.
DeleteIt means Russ needs to branch out. Lucky there was no loss of life or limb. Bekah should take a bough. I'm done now.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I was about to leaf!!
DeleteIt's a beautiful tree, especially in the fall. But I hate those spiky balls too. They hurt!!
ReplyDeleteKeep Bekah away from our Kokopelli! He's enough of a pain as it is.
ReplyDeleteThat was a lucky 'break' with the tree limb missing your house. Definitely time for a new tree for sure.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Russ will have more supervising to do to make sure the tree removal guys do it right!
All Russ has to remember is to yell "Timber" and not "Geronimo"!!
I bet you'll have fun deciding what kind of a tree to replace it with.... glad it didn't do really big damage.
ReplyDeleteRuss' theory "cracked" me up!!! :cD
ReplyDeleteHowdy Y'all,
ReplyDeleteI didn't know sweet-gums grew that far North! !!! Yep, that's one dead limb, alright... Sorry, about the trellis, maybe you can get an iron one next time...
We've got a 50 foot bald-cypress that fell over a few years ago and landed on the propane tank, the electric wires and knocked several limbs off of the mulberry tree... It's still lying there DEAD for the birds to perch on and the stars to shine through... Joyce likes it !!!
Hope y'all get a 'good' price on taking the tree down and have a REALLY HAPPY DAY doing it !!!!
WOW! That is a mess alright. I'm glad no one got hurt. We had a big tree branch fall on our truck and trailer here in the RV park during a storm. Fortunately, the electric and cable TV lines caught it so it didn't do damage - just made a big mess.

I would say that this was a wee warning from the head angel to get the tree gone. You were fortunate.
