We had a little breeze through here last night – not much of anything really. Didn’t even disturb the pool blanket or blow over a trash can or a chair. HOWEVER, we have a REALLY tall, REALLY old sweet gum tree in the backyard. I don’t know how tall it is, but it is certainly reaching for the sky.
This tree seems to be extremely brittle and we get small twigs down all the time. Last night ‘twas more than a twig that let loose.
One branch about 20’ long or more came down and took a bunch of little branches with it. Looking at the end of the big branch that went down tells us that this is NOT good!
We were lucky the electrical wire to the garage somehow escaped injury. Not so much my trellis and star jasmine. You can see the trellis buried there in the middle of the picture.
But when Russ and son-in-law Bob moved the limb, they found the jasmine was fine, the only casualty was the trellis.
We blame Bekah!! I have little fairies and angel statues in that garden. In a nod to Dr. Who (BBC Program) Bekah rearranged all the angels so they faced each other. Apparently they can’t do their evil deeds when they face each other (go figure…angels…evil???) Anyway, it is Russ’s theory that she made them angry so they all flew up to the tree and sat on the same limb until it broke off. That’s his story and he’s sticking to it. It’s better than my story which is I wanted to take that tree out last year as I didn’t think it was stable!!
Anyhow, we count ourselves lucky to have sustained no more damage than we did and three tree guys have been called to give us a bid. The tree is history!!
