So I need to put something up today so that Pig Post will not be the first thing to pop-up when my blog is opened!! I did miss a bet though in not telling the story of Russ and the "Pastor and The Pig in a Box"! No pictures of that incident but you can ask Russ next time you see him!! So with nothing going on today, I will just do a miscellany of thoughts. Oh, we are meeting some fellow bloggers this coming Tuesday – can hardly wait. Stay tuned for updates later in the week!
You remember a few days ago I wrote about my sister Laila and her husband Brian for Brian’s birthday. Well, today she tells me they are going to be FAMOUS! Oh yes, we will have to beat the paparazzi off with a stick! Brian and Laila are huge Duck fans and go to almost every game of every sport. Yesterday they were at a baseball game and were interviewed by the local news. It’s a really cute story and I’m proud of them for making the news. You can see it if you click on the link. I couldn’t legally upload the video to You Tube so the link will have to do it. Click on the video to play it after you open the link. BTW, I made that very handsome hat that Brian is wearing!!
And speaking of making things, all you sewers out there, I need a bit of help. I know I should know this by now, but I am only a hobby sewer. I do it for a while and then I go do something else and I never have gotten good at it (or anything else for that matter). Anyway, I like to make doll clothes. They’re fairly quick, don’t take a lot of fabric, and the ultimate wearers of these garments are not picky!
I have lots of little scraps of fabric, lace, miscellaneous buttons and trims, you know, all the left overs. So I have been using up what I have on hand and intermittently sewing up these dolls clothes during the last couple of months. I have a question about this one. I did some decorative stitching along the edges of the sleeves and the hem. Then, I trimmed along that stitching on the sleeves but don’t know if that is what I am really supposed to do. Before I ruin the hem by trimming, can someone tell me if that is the right way to do it, or does it even matter? At my age, I should know this but in all honesty, that is the first time since I have had my machine that I have used this stitch!! Let’s see, the machine is only about 25 years old or so!!
So, to trim or not to trim, that is the question???
Just cuz I’m somewhat proud of my efforts (imperfect as they may be) here are the other dresses I made. Used up some scraps, you betcha!! Of course my granddaughters don’t really play with their 18” dolls anymore, but maybe they will put these away and save them for their children.
This dress (on the right) is made from two fat quarters that my hubby bought for me around Christmastime. There is just enough fabric to make this dress.
And that’s all she wrote…
Two fat quarters? Does that mean he paid 50 cents for it?
ReplyDeleteI know next to nothing about sewing but I do know that you are a very talented lady. Love the clothes! Enjoy your weekend. ~wheresweaver
ReplyDeleteI see that Judy asked the same question that I have... what in the world is a "fat quarter". I started making my own clothes when I was I 12 years old and have never heard that term.... BUT... your doll clothes are darling! I'll bet your grandgirls put them away as keepsakes!
ReplyDeleteWell, at least I know what a fat quarter is, but that is about all I know. I would think that doll clothes would take a lot of patience and nimble fingers. Your sleeve trim looks very nice. I have no idea what is considered right or wrong. As to news and sews, if news rhymed with sews it would be spelled nose--go figure! :)
ReplyDeleteWhy would it matter? Do you like the way it looks now? If not then change it. I can only sew a straight line so I'm not much of a sewer although I have made my first quilt top and I do know what a fat quarter is! LOL
ReplyDeleteI know nothing about sewing, but I know a whole lot about cute and those dresses are just too cute.
ReplyDeleteI love to sew and have a whole tub full of material and fat quarters. However, I've never made doll clothes. They are darling!
ReplyDeleteThose doll clothes are adorable. It reminds me of my mom and my sister, both who made doll clothes for kids and grandkids. I didn't inherit that talent. But I was on the receiving end of the doll clothes when I was a kid. I love the pinks and purples. I would hope the grand daughters would dress their dolls, if they still have them, and put them away for keepsakes. If they don't have the dolls, maybe you could go to Goodwill get some, dress them in the clothes you made, and give them to them. Either way, I wish I would have saved my doll clothes like my sister did. She has all her dolls AND the clothes my mom made her and she is 64!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I had to Google it but I now know too what a Fat Quarter is :)
nice work on the doll clothes Donna!!..so cute!!
ReplyDeleteI don't like to think of myself as a "sewer," which rhymes with "newer."

those clothes are really cute!!! My grandma (paternal) used to make dolly cloths everytime i visited.. blankets too. A wonderful memory.
ReplyDeleteThe only things I sew are keeping my buttons one and seams closed! :) I think you did a fabulous job on those doll clothes!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful dresses Donna! You sure make use of every minute in your day.
ReplyDeleteMake it an awesome day!

When you said all 'those sewers out there', I thought at first you were talking about holding tanks!!
ReplyDeletePaulette's always talking about 'fat quarters' for quilting, but I've never had the inclination to ask what they were!
Enjoyed watching Brian and Laila's interview. Looking forward to hearing about your visit with fellow bloggers. Wishing you and Russ a GREAT SUNDAY!
ReplyDeletelearned how to sew at a young age also, out of self defense, because of my height nothing fit right. Came in handy when I was in corporate world and had to wear a suit everyday...saved big bucks, but don't think I could make the doll clothes, so intricate and adorable.
ReplyDeleteWow, Donna, doll clothes....and I don't have a clue about that kind of detail. I thought you said the dolls weren't picky!? By the way, my brand new machine that I got for my birthday last year is probably 30 years old! It is a used Bernina 1230 and cost more than two new machines would have cost from an ordinary place. I LOVE it. My sister is a quilter and she has had hers for 30 years now and recommended it to me. Good choice. But I still don't do doll clothes. Maybe because I have 4 grandsons and a granddaughter who never really wanted a doll.
