I wasn’t sure I would like this book. It is a work of fiction written from the dog, Enzo’s, point of view. I generally find books voiced by an animal to be contrived or way too cutesy. This book proved to be the exception to the rule.
The book is The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.
I had a hard time reading the first chapter of the book as it begins with Enzo describing his condition of old age. I could see my Rusty in that description and it made my eyes wet. But as the story goes on, you can see it is about love, loss, family, perseverance, and eventually, triumph.
This book grabbed my heart and held on and squeezed it for every emotion I have ever felt. I had to look back at the opening several times to remind myself that this was a work of fiction. The author must have experienced love and loss and triumph in his life to be able to write so eloquently of these emotions, and make it so believable from a dog’s point of view. So well written, so poignant, yet so full of hope and triumph.
So, I would like to pass this book on to someone else who might enjoy it. You don’t even have to own a dog to get something from this book. If you would like to have the book, leave a comment and I will draw a name on Thursday when we get back from Portland. Then when you are done, you can pass it on to someone else. Kick back, relax in that lounge chair with a glass of lemonade, and enjoy the ride. This is a GREAT read.
Sounds like a good read. I wouldn't mind reading it. Count me in. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteDonna, This was free download from Amazon in February, so I already have it but haven't read it yet. Thanks for the heads up, I'll move it up the list.
ReplyDeleteLoved the book. I have it on audio. Please do not include me in the giveaway.

I read the book for a book club. It was too sad for me because it hit too close to home. My friends enjoyed it though. It is an easy read.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea, yes, pass it onto those that can appreciate it. I don't have the time, but I think your idea is a good one anyhow.
ReplyDeleteI have the book. I bought it too soon after Lizzie's passing so it sits waiting to be read. I read the first chapter, too, then chickened out. Thank you for the review. I may read it when my daughter an I are over on the coast if I can see the print. Otherwise, I may look to see if it's on Kindle, yet, and pass mine along, too.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a book I would like please count me in on the draw.
ReplyDeleteRead that one a long time ago and enjoyed it very much!
ReplyDeletecount me in for the draw!..maybe just maybe I will be the lucky winner!!..have fun in Portland!!
ReplyDeleteHave you seen Hachi? We got it from Netflix a few months ago. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to watch it, but it turned out to be a feel-good movie and not too much of a tear-jerker ... some misty eyes, though.
ReplyDeleteYou sure have a way with words "grabbed my heart and squeezed it for every emotion I have ever felt". Love that!

Sounds like a wonderful book, Donna. I would love to read it but it would too expensive for you to send it to Canada if I was lucky enough to win your draw so I will watch for it when I get my ereader. You are such a thoughtful person and such a good writer! Judy from Rvlifeonwheels
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good read. I've always loved animals with cats being my preferred companion choice until 4 years ago when this beautiful little man showed up on my doorstep. I tried to find his other humans because he was well taken care of and smart as can be but I couldn't find them and he left after a 3 day visit. I first thought it was probably best because at the time I was caretaker for 2 aunts and one uncle who were the last of my family and I didn't think I'd have the proper amount of time to devote to his care. But I missed him sooo much and told my husband that if he should ever come back, he was staying because he had won my heart. Kept looking around the neighborhood but figured the Lord must have had a better place for him. He came Thanksgiving Eve. Two days after Christmas I wake up getting kisses from this wonderful little fella that has become my truest and most trusted companion. He has seen me thru many rough times and much sadness but continues to brighten every day I have. So please do throw my name in the hat. And thanks for doing this.
ReplyDeleteI just might download it on my Kindle.
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt, The Art of Racing in the Rain is one of the best books I have ever read. Had to buy it for my kids and grandkids. So glad you enjoyed it!!
